Every now and then, an album will come across my desk that at first glance doesn’t look like it will really work. Then, after thinking about the concept for a while, I think that maybe this could work. After listening to the album, 80% – 90% of the time my initial instincts were correct…it didn’t work. Not so for Mads Tolling & the Mads Men ‘Playing the 60s’.

Mads Tolling, a Danish violinist, playing hits (including TV show themes) from the 60’s with a jazz instrumentation (keys, guitar, bass, drums), at first glance doesn’t seem like it will ‘work’. But it does! The tune selection is right on, the arranging is precise and engaging, and the playing is very, very good.

Lots of great tunes are included in this album, but I was only able to play 10 tracks on this show. I highly suggest you go and check out the other 5. Here is what I played:

1.Taste of Honey
2. My Girl
3. Georgia On My Mind
4. All Along the Watch Tower
5. Meet the Flintstones
6. Peter Gunn
7. Hawaii 5-0
8. The Look of Love
9. Pink Panther
10. The Good, The Bad, The Ugly
