Folks, this show and the next one were absolute gems to put together! We had the great privilege to interview four people (our first time ever interviewing 4 people) playing the music from this incredible album, New American Symphonies. This album features two pieces that although written decades apart fit together incredibly well and both feature Jim Pugh on trombone! Both pieces were recorded by Jim Anderson and produced by Ulrike Schwarz.

Jim Pugh: An amazing trombonist and educator (maybe I’m biased and full disclosure I studied with him at University of Illinois as I pursued by DMA), Jim attended the Eastman School of Music and then joined the Woody Herman Orchestra, worked with Chick Corea, then settled in NYC to become one of the top call trombone players for a few decades! He joined the jazz faculty at the University of Illinois over 20 years ago and can be found on numerous albums (far too many to list) and any of your favorite movie soundtracks from the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s.
Jim Anderson: If you’ve listened to recorded acoustic jazz music over the past 50 years, you’ve heard Jim Anderson’s recording prowess. He has earned 13 Grammy Awards, and two Peabody Awards. Jim has recorded everyone you like! Jim got his career started by engineering for the radio in Pittsburgh, PA and become the broadcast technician for NPR. Check out Anderson Audio NY for more! In 1980, Anderson moved to New York to launch his career as a freelance engineer and producer, and over the next several decades, he would go on to record studio albums, live concerts, and film scores across a diverse array of genres with the likes of McCoy Tyner, Christian McBride, Arturo Sandoval, Petula Clark, Patricia Barber, John Zorn, and hundreds more.
Ulrike Schwarz: A certified Tonmeister, Ulrike worked with German Public Radio spent more than ten years serving as the senior sound engineer for large orchestral and jazz productions at the famed Bayerischer Rundfunk in Munich, where she broke the mold as a woman in a male-dominated field and garnered numerous honors for her recordings and broadcasts, including multiple Echo Klassik, Diamant D’Opera, Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenindustrie, and Diapason d’Or awards. With Jim Anderson (her husband) she has created a groundbreaking body of work in the field of immersive audio. In 2023, Schwarz was named President of the Verband Deutscher Tonmeister (The Association of German Sound Professionals – VDT)
